If you have struggled to get paid because you do not have a bank account, or you want a safer alternative to cash and cheques, a prepaid payroll card can help. You load money first, then spend online, in-store or at ATMs. Employers can pay wages straight to the card account using Faster Payments or BACS, so there is no cash handling and no cheque-cashing queues.
You do not need a traditional bank account or a credit history to apply, but you will need to complete standard KYC and address verification. Because payroll cards are not linked to your main bank account, they help you budget and reduce exposure if details are compromised.

Notes
Exact fees for purchases, ATM withdrawals, replacement cards and overseas use vary by provider and plan. Always check the current fee table before applying.
Secondary cardholders must complete ID checks and must be named on the account.
Some employers prefer to fund cards via bulk files or a portal instead of individual bank transfers. Ask your payroll team which method they support.
Good to know
3-D Secure is widely supported for online purchases.
Most providers support card freeze, instant notifications and in-app PIN help.
If you regularly send money to family, some cards allow a secondary card abroad or low-cost transfers in-app. Check the programme rules first.
